At what age should children begin piano lessons?
Although some children may begin earlier, those who have adjusted to school and have begun to read do best. It is important that children have the time and support of their caregivers to monitor effective regular practice.
Do we need to own a piano? What kind?
Yes, you do need to own or rent a piano! Since regular practice is the key to improvement, having your own piano is essential to progress.
The acoustic piano responds best to our physical input, so is recommended for learning how to control a broad range of dynamics, touch, tone, pedal effects, etc. Digital pianos with less than 88 keys are not adequate. Some 88-key digital pianos (with pedal) are sufficient to begin on, but in order to advance as a sensitive pianist across diverse styles and genres students should invest in a very good piano. A grand piano is recommended for advanced grades.
How long should a student practice?
Students should practice every day in a focused manner and practice all the details of each assignment. It's not so much the amount of time but the quality of time that matters. However, a general guideline might be:
